Hey Shenee! Hot Brand Action Scholarship entry with infographic!

Shenee at HeyShenee.com is holding a scholarship contest that I couldn’t ignore.

I have SO MANY THINGS on my plate right now: tutorials to complete, videos to edit, paintings to paint, branding to work on.  Completing an entry for a scholarship contest that is DUE TODAY is crazypants right now.

Lets make magic!

I’m crazypants and NOW is the right time to do this.

Why do I need Hot Brand Action RIGHT now?

I’m Kat and I can paint. {I’m a domain name genius, I know} I’m reframing KatCanPaint.com from being all about my paintings to engage readers more with art courses and workshops.  I’ve got BIG PLANS for content that I’m excited to share. {EXCITED!!!!!!!!1!!1!! but that doesn’t look profesh, does it?}

I’m flailing with the branding and engagement portion of my big vision. Let’s be really real right now, I’ve got a whole $1.49 in my bank account so I can’t afford to invest in myself & business; I’m squeaking by and keeping forward momentum through free info and trades. {Sounds familiar, yes?}

I’m clear on my purpose but I need real guidance on packaging my gifts into unforgettable and engaging  content: I know what I want to do  but I’m not there yet with the killer copy, branding, or style.

This scholarship gave me the perfect opportunity to get it together in the style department and make a fancy schmancy infographic. {I absorbed all the totally awesome infographic tutorials over at HeyShenee.com last night to create this one.}

Hey Shenee! I made this fancy Infographic

What do I want to be KNOWN for?

  • Amazing Art
  • Friendly, accessible personality
  • Fresh, Fun, Easy-to-Follow, and High Quality art courses / workshops.

If you’re not creating the art you want because you, “can’t even draw a straight line,” then I’m going to rock your socks with easy, step-by-step drawing and painting tutorials. Also: Get a ruler and get over it. I’m Kat, I can paint, and you can too!

Don’t have a muse that calls you? Beautify your home and life with amazing art from me.

Change the World? Yes please:

I share free art education via free tutorials on my site because I want people to get their hands on this info and use it to better their lives by creating more beauty via art. Art and beauty can heal by building self esteem through positive self expression and I’m here to share quality content and spread this message.

Thank you for this opportunity Shenee and good luck with all the entries you’ve got to judge!

I’m going to be an infographic machine after all this.

Challenging my photography skills : hurricane + cell phone + bathroom + painting

The lighting in my master bath is perfect for photographing paintings. Too bad it is all the way across the house.

I really think these photographs came out great! I took these photos in my bathroom, because there is a huge frosted window so I get beautiful diffused lighting.  Start where you are, right?

I’m really pushing myself to take decent cell phone camera photographs until I can get a camera of my own.

I use my cell phone camera for everything.  Instagram aside, I use it to take photos of my finished and in progress works.  But I take them in the darkish corner of my space, where my desk and painting studio are set up.  Darkish space + camera phone = not the greatest of photographs.  Even with all the photoediting in the world, my grainy / blurry / orange / shadowed CRAP photos cannot be redeemed.

But, would you look at these lovelies:

Collage of my original painting, taken with my cell phone camera.

Hilariously, I took these during the Hurricane (I live in Florida) so I know that I can get a good shot in questionable weather and lighting, with my cellphone, in the bathroom of all places.

Even the detail shots look really nice, my phone has a macro setting that I’ve never used before… but you can see all the brush strokes and layers of paint.

I’m working on a huge project right now and getting nice photos is really important to me. I’ll share more later this week!

now imagine... painting by Lara Harwood

Art to Inspiration August : Lara Harwood

Art to Inspiration is a collaborative project organized to bring exposure to the art community around the world. We feature any medium of art from young artists and design posts to share how we have been inspired by the piece.  (taken from the website)

now imagine... painting by Lara Harwood

Title : …now imagine all the thick birdsong thick as a forest
Name of Artist : Lara Harwood
URL : http://www.laraharwood.co.uk/works/sketch-books/watercolours-from-india-2009/18-Sketch-Book-imagine-

I am in need of some thoughtful inspiration and as an artist I thought I would create a painting based on this work.  Instead, a poem surfaced,  so I went with that instead.

now imagine all the thick birdsong thick as a forest

dew drops dripping

weighing down the ferns and leaves

thicket of feathers thick with the burden of birdsong

rich ultramarine phtalo green and yellow ochre

carmine red peeking through the

shadows and the dappling of light

so colorful it pools melodious on the page

Imaginary Wardrobe : Illustrating my favorite clothing from Pinterest

Hello Thursday!

I have had a crazy awesome week! A lot of breakthroughs that felt like breakdowns in the middle.  I have been driving myself crazy trying to nail down exactly what I am doing with my art.  What is my style?  What do I keep, what do I focus on?  What am I bored with and what do I let go?

I’m robbing myself of the joy of painting trying to know set-in-stone answers to those questions when I’ve never been a set-in-stone kind of girl.

My favorite thing from this week is the Ah ha! Moment that I had while running through my pinboards on pinterest.  I love fashion: Colors, textures, patterns, I am super inspired by a lot of fashiony things, even if I will only covet and never own pieces I adore.  Firstly I am a plus sized girl and a lot of the clothing that I love just isn’t made in my size, and I’m not learning to sew any time soon.  And, secondly, I am definitely never going to be able to afford to purchase ever article of clothing that I love anyway- with clothing, shoes, and jewelry I bet I could spend enough to purchase a new house.

So I am living vicariously through my imaginary pinterest wardrobe when the Ah Ha! Moment hit me: if I can’t own the clothes I’m fantasizing about I can illustrate them!

Lightbulb!

Here is the first of my Imaginary Wardrobe girls:

Imaginary Wardrobe 1 by KatcanPaint fashion illustration

Isn’t she cute? I never really considered fashion illustration my thing, but this girl was fun and quick to make.  Whenever I start to drive myself bonkers, I’m going to step back and illustrate one of these girls; I’m not here to kill myself with worry over painting, I’m here to have fun!

Stylized butterfly wings are all I’ve wanted to paint lately.  Its easy to get lost in the patterns, color, and repetition.

Here is a quick peak of a mixed media painting I’ve been working on.  She has a lot of layers of paint/paper/gel medium/more paint/marker/pens/and paint.  Did I mention paint? You can see the layers of paper and paint on canvas, swirls and loops and flowers, and scrapbook papers layered in there too.

sneak peak Almost done! I just have a few more layers of glazing and detailing before she is ready to be sealed.

20 of my favorite places on the interwebs

ffffound

ffffound (Photo credit: Javier Arce ☄)

I spend a lot of time on the internet.  I goof off, I read blogs, I check my horoscope, facebook, and emails.  I have no clue what the twitters is all about, but I check tweets out over there too. I use FFFFOUND for image inspiration.  I *heart* pinterest because I’m a super visual person (hrm, artist, who’d have thunk it) and flickr too for that matter. I have photoshop but I play with picnik all the time (and its going away! ARG!) But the regular places I check out for crafty stuff, art stuff, and bloggy stuff are generally the same.  They blow my mind away with beautiful design and great content.

The Link Love in no particular order:

  • Gala Darling is a radical self love superstar and fashionista.
  • Alexandra Franzen is a sassy wordsmith. I bought her stuff, it rocked my socks, I wrote her a love note.  (Sounds kinda creepy now, oh wells.)
  • Seth Godin is in my inbox daily, makin’ sense.
  • Marie Forleo Q&A Tuesday! Plus- who doesn’t want to be Rich Happy and Hot?
  • Danielle LaPorte White Hot Truth. Get the Firestarter Sessions, seriously. Bizzness and creative success bootcamp for the soul.
  • Dollar Store Crafts I love me some crafty girl-time.  On the cheap!
  • The Pioneer Woman  I need no other foodblog. Really! If its a week night and I can’t be arsed to figure out something to cook P-dub is my best friend. I’m lazy, my family eats (m)any of her recipes.
  • Notes from Halfland = inspiration wonderland! Stop-motion folk-lore animation in progress blog: each post is a step of the creation of set and sculpture.
  • A Fanciful Twist is an sensory treat.  Luscious photographs, beautiful art, heart-warming stories. I once shared a recipe for sticky lemon chicken with her; she blogged about it, I felt like a rockstar.  I’m a dork, I know.
  • Elsa Mora is another prolific, dedicated artist and mother I admire.  Paper cuts, jewelry, drawings, paintings, sculpture, dolls, books…inspiring.
  • Chicken Lips original holiday folk art/paper mache sculptures.
  • James Jean is my favorite contemporary artist.
  • Cart Before The Horse Husband and wife team that makes awesome folk art fabric sculptures & dolls.
  • Paper Forest is another amazing blog about paper crafts.  I’m a sucker for anything diy, paper art, and crafty stuff!
  • Design*Sponge gorgeous home decor and diy inspiration.  But you already know that.

Surf and enjoy!

I was thinking about points of view, and how most people only see parts of who you are and what you are all about. Sometimes it has to do with how you present yourself, and sometimes it is how someone wants to view you. Its a lot harder to change the perception of the latter.

I think maybe if I were to chose a theme for 2009 I would choose, “Letting Go.” There are a lot of other things that go through my mind lately but I think they run along the same theme, acceptance, giving, letting go.

More on this later. Definitely.
